background

Obsidian (facet-1H2 Cabochon-4Xy) is an Obsidian-class Gem and a former colony scout under the authority of White Diamond. her gem type was amongst the earliest templates used to create servants for the diamonds, giving her a fairly higher status amongst the gem empire’s warrior class gems and she enjoyed an elevated level of respect from even members of the gem elite.

however, after tens of thousands of years of service, she became disillusioned with the cycle of gem life and defected from Homeworld, seizing her own rogue starship and assembling a crew of rebel and outcasted Gems in order to deviate from and oppose the Gem Empire’s agenda from the shadows of space.

in combat, she wields a set of rapiers and utilizes a limited usage of geokinesis.

personality

obsidian was originally a cold, but calculating type of gem through and through. as a subordinate of white diamond, the progenitor of gemkind, she was expected to adhere to a high standard of behavior and complete her missions and goals with precision. for thousands of years, obsidian served her diamond with this demeanor as her default state, but eons of mindless servitude sparked a flame of rebellion inside of her.

although liberated from her predetermined role, obsidian continues to outwardly project this attitude to properly achieve her goals. she does however try her best to be friendly with the gems under her protection, leading to constant awkward yet humorous moments due to her lack of real social skills.

artist guide

details to keep in mind

  • if drawing in a semi-realistic style, she has a rounded and bulbous nose

  • obsidian, like canonical Steven universe gems, does not have ears

  • her right eye should be covered at all times by either her hair or her eyepatch; she only has a singular eye so there is nothing underneath

  • please try to keep her skin to a similar or relative value in regards to her palette as a whole and not make her significantly lighter

    • for example, if drawing in light or pastel colors, please make sure the overall contrast in values match up

flexibility

  • she is styled with purple coloration for the sake of contrast and to be more easily readable; feel free to make her more or less saturated depending on your preference and choice of style

  • her hair is generally just a messy bun with pieces of hair flying about, so don’t feel any need to perfectly match it up to the reference

  • her cape can be short or long, I personally do what length i feel like when i draw her
